Record a Voice Note

Capture a longer thought, conversation, or meeting that you want to keep.

Voice Notes are for recordings you want to keep, revisit, and organize. Use regular dictation when you only want text inserted into the app in front of you.

Record on iPhone or iPad

1. Open Notes in Monologue.
2. Start a recording.
3. Pause and resume when needed.
4. Stop the recording when you are finished.

Monologue saves the recording and begins uploading it for processing. Keep the device online until the upload finishes.

Record on Mac

Open Notes in Monologue or use your Voice Note shortcut. Before starting, choose the audio you need:

• Microphone records you and sound near your selected input.
• System audio adds sound playing through the Mac, such as the other side of a meeting.

System audio is optional and requires Screen Recording permission in macOS. If permission is missing, Monologue can continue with microphone audio only. Check the selected sources before an important recording.

Use meeting detection on Mac

Meeting detection can remind you to start a Voice Note when a supported calling app begins using the microphone. You can turn it off entirely or suppress reminders for selected apps in Settings → Notes.
