Modes and custom instructions

Adapt Monologue's output to the app and kind of writing you are doing.

Modes tell Monologue how you want a dictation rewritten. Use them for recurring work such as messages, email, or structured updates.

Choose a mode

Open Customization on Mac or Modes on iPhone and iPad. Select the mode that best matches the result you want before dictating. On Mac, you can also tap right Shift while dictating to open the mode picker.

Examples:

• A messaging mode can keep the result short and conversational.
• An email mode can turn fragments into a complete message.
• A project-update mode can apply a repeatable structure and terminology.

Activate a mode for an app or website

On Mac, a mode can activate automatically for selected apps or websites. Add an app, or enter a website domain such as chatgpt.com. Monologue uses the matching mode when that app or site is active.

Turn on Override default when the mode should take precedence over the normal selection. Keep activation lists focused so two modes do not compete for the same place.

Send automatically

Enable Auto enter when Monologue should simulate a send key after it finishes processing. Choose the key expected by the target app.

Use Auto enter only in apps where sending immediately is safe. Leave it off for email, forms, terminals, and anywhere you normally review text before submitting it.

Blazing Fast

Blazing Fast favors speed over cleanup. It skips the normal smart post-processing path, so filler words, false starts, rough punctuation, and inconsistent casing may remain.

Blazing Fast can have its own app and website activations and Auto enter behavior. Use it when latency matters more than polished output; use Default or a custom mode when you want Monologue’s normal cleanup.

Write useful instructions

Describe the output, not every transformation the model should perform. For example:

Write a concise project update. Keep product names exactly as dictated and use bullets only when I list three or more items.

Start with one clear instruction, test it in the app where you normally write, and add detail only when a recurring problem remains. Put names and terminology in the dictionary instead of repeating them in every mode.
