Preferences and dictation modes

Choose your audio behavior and control how Monologue writes.

Open Monologue → Settings → Preferences to adjust dictation on your iPhone or iPad.

Audio and recording preferences

You can choose:

• The language or languages you dictate in.
• How long Monologue waits before ending a quiet recording.
• Whether to prefer the device’s built-in microphone.
• Whether other audio pauses while you dictate.
• Dictation sounds and haptic feedback.

Choose how Monologue writes

Open Settings → Dictation Instructions to select or edit a mode. A mode tells Monologue how to shape the finished text—for example, which instructions to follow for a particular kind of writing.

The Monologue keyboard and Apple Shortcuts can use your custom modes. You can also choose Blazing Fast when speed matters more than cleanup. Blazing Fast returns a more direct transcript and does not apply the usual writing instructions.

Show progress outside the app

In Preferences, turn on Live Activities for Keyboard Dictation or Voice Notes to see recording progress on the Lock Screen and, on supported devices, in the Dynamic Island.
